Alternative DNA Testing When Standard Cheek Swabs Are Not Available

Unusual DNA Sample Testing

Rhode Island Fingerprinting provides professional coordination support for unusual DNA sample testing when a standard cheek swab is unavailable. All unusual DNA samples must go through laboratory viability review to determine whether enough usable DNA is present for testing.

Viability Testing Required Before DNA Testing

Unusual DNA Sample Process

Unusual DNA samples must be processed through a laboratory viability review first. This determines whether the submitted sample contains enough usable DNA to proceed with relationship testing.

Turnaround Time: Approximately 5 business days after sample acceptance and laboratory review.

Important: Any unusual DNA sample from a deceased tested party must be handled under chain-of-custody with Next of Kin participation.

Lower Complexity Alternative DNA Samples

Category A Unusual DNA Samples

Blood on Paper
Blood collected on paper such as Whatman, Matrix, or similar paper.

Semen
Fresh semen sample or vaginal swab containing semen.

Turnaround Time: Approximately 5 business days after viability review.

Nail Clippings
Nail clippings may be submitted for review. Approximately 5–10 clippings may be needed.

Cigarette Butts
Cigarette butts may be reviewed for DNA testing. Quantity may depend on type, brand, and sample condition.

Diabetic Test Strips
Diabetic test strips may be reviewed for DNA testing. Approximately 5–6 strips may be needed.

Tissue / Organ
Tissue or organ samples may be reviewed through chain-of-custody testing only. Sample viability may depend on age, storage conditions, and whether the individual was embalmed.

Chewing Gum
Chewing gum may be reviewed for DNA testing. Sugarless gum is preferred.

Ear Swab
Ear swabs may be reviewed for DNA testing.

Fetal Demise
Fetal tissue may be reviewed for DNA testing. Special handling and chain-of-custody requirements may apply.

Semen Stain on Fabric
Semen stains on fabric may be reviewed. The stained area should be indicated on the fabric.

Toothbrush
A toothbrush may be reviewed for DNA testing if used by the tested individual.

Umbilical Cord
Umbilical cord samples may be reviewed. A reference sample from the mother may be needed, and the cord should be dried.

Turnaround Time: Approximately 5 business days after viability review.

DNA testing may be available using eligible fetal demise tissue specimens when standard collections are unavailable.

Special handling, viability review, laboratory approval, and chain-of-custody procedures may apply.

Turnaround Time: Approximately 5 business days after viability review.

Chain of Custody & Next of Kin Participation Required

Deceased Individual DNA Testing

DNA testing involving a deceased individual requires chain-of-custody procedures and legal Next of Kin participation before testing can proceed.

Examples may include tissue samples, teeth, hair with roots, umbilical cord samples, fetal demise specimens, and other eligible biological samples.

Restricted Sample Types

Samples Not Accepted For DNA Testing

The following sample types are not accepted for unusual DNA testing:

• Fixed samples / formalin-fixed samples
• Food
• Vomit
• Stool samples
• Urine

Before Submitting A Sample

Unusual DNA Sample Submission Requirements

• Sample must be suitable for DNA viability review
• Certain samples require minimum quantities
• Certain samples require special packaging
• Chain-of-custody procedures may apply
• Next of Kin authorization may be required for deceased individual samples
• Laboratory acceptance is subject to viability review
• Additional documentation may be required depending on specimen type
